Mochi Donuts – Are they worth their ever growing price?

Critic Rating: 7/10 ⭐️

Ever since we came out of quarantine, mochi donuts have risen in popularity amongst teens. It’s the perfect bite-sized snack to eat after school with friends or alone at home. The donut is fried like typical, but every other aspect sets them apart from the regular ones we see at Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme. Although circular like their traditional counterparts, mochi donuts consist of multiple little mochi balls that are easy to pull apart and share with others. They are not messy at all.

However, due to inflation and exponential growth in popularity, it has become a bit pricey (approx. $45 a box for 12 donuts). The vast array of flavors these donuts come in provides us with some favorites that are very much worth the price.

Here are some of the flavors we tried at “Mochinut Bayside” and whether they’re worth the cost.

Ferrero rocher:  8 ⭐️ rating

The donut had a very rich, chocolatey flavor. It came with cocoa pebble toppings and a ferrero rocher in the middle. While the chocolate flavor was easily distinguishable, the donut itself was kind of heavy, probably due to the generous amount of rich chocolate frosting layered on top.

Oreo: 6 ⭐️rating

Sadly, the donut didn’t satisfy our expectations. It came with an oreo in the middle, along with crushed bits all around the donut’s surface. The presentation heightened our expectations of the taste. Unfortunately, the donuts tasted like stale oreos and dry cream, leaving us disappointed at the first bite.

Churro: 5 ⭐️ rating

If you’ve had mochi donuts before, you may agree with us that the churro flavored donuts end up tasting the most basic, the “vanilla” of donuts.” Sadly, this was the case at Mochinut. There wasn’t much flavor, and the churro  tasted a bit bland. We recommend adding ice cream to compliment the cinnamon sugar already on the donut.

Fruit pebble: 4⭐️ rating

The donut left an odd taste in our mouths after we tried it. There was white frosting on top, sprinkled with classic rainbow Fruity Pebbles from cereal. The frosting tasted like yogurt, and the cereal didn’t have the satisfying crunch we looked for as a topping. The pebbles might have even been a bit soggy and out of all the flavors we ordered, this was our least favorite.

Overall, mochi donuts have a fun and unique look that come with more flavors than what we reviewed at Mochinut. Their unique shapes and exotic  flavors are responsible for the  donut’s rapid rise to fame, providing consumers with an experience different from what is traditionally offered.

We definitely recommend trying for the first experience, and even though some of the flavors didn’t satisfy us, this would be a perfect dessert, to share between friends or family. If you find yourself in front of a place that sells these delectable treats, go ahead and expose yourself to the wonderful new world of mochi donuts!
