With AP tests, Regents, and finals all piling up at once, it’s easy to forget the basics, like eating a proper meal. Before you know it, it’s midnight and you’re elbow deep in a family sized box of Frosted Flakes (believe me, I’ve been there). During these times, taking care of yourself and treating yourself to a wholesome, satisfying meal is more important than ever. Of course, not everyone has the time, or energy, to whip up something nourishing and healthy from scratch. If that sounds like you, Yoodon might just be your new favorite spot. Yoodon is located at 216-19 Northern Blvd, Flushing, NY 11361 and is accessible to Harrisites via the Q20A, taking a little over 40 minutes to an hour to get there from Townsend.
Step inside and you’ll be embraced by a cozy, calming atmosphere. Korean music plays faintly in the background, and each seat is adorned with colorful cushions — a small but welcome comfort after a long, exhausting day, making it an ideal place to settle in with some comfort food and get a bit of studying done. Most people order takeout, so the restaurant is generally empty. Every dish is freshly prepared to order, offering that warm homemade feel that can carry you through your toughest cram sessions. Yoodon’s menu offers a range of options, from traditional kimbap to fusion cheeseburgers to hearty soups. Best of all, the restaurant prioritizes health and wellness, incorporating fresh, crisp vegetables into nearly every dish. Though the restaurant itself is small, what it lacks in size, it makes up for in flavor. Each item on the menu has its own unique and distinct characteristics that will make your tastebuds cry for more.
Veggie Kimbap ($10.95)
The first item I tried was the veggie kimbap. Beneath a decorative array of fresh vegetables lay beautifully rolled slices of kimbap, circular and tightly packed. The kimbap contains red onion, spring mix, red bell peppers, cheese, and pickled radish, and is very tangy and crunchy. Light but satisfying, it is an ideal option for anyone seeking a simple, refreshing meal between classes. Personally, the flavor was a bit bland due to the absence of protein or sauces. Still, the generous portion left me with plenty of leftovers, perfect for a salad the next day. It is a solid choice for a clean, vegetable-focused dish. I’d rate it a 7/10.
Pork Cutlet Bowl ($10.95)
My second order was the pork cutlet bowl. The dish arrived beautifully plated, with warm rice on one side and a crisp salad on the other. On top sat a golden brown pork cutlet, finished with a few pieces of pickled radish. The contrast between the crunchy exterior and the tender, juicy pork was delicious, especially when paired with either the soft rice or fresh veggies. The accompanying sauce, nutty and sweet, and just slightly tangy, can be served on top or on the side depending on your preference. I appreciated the generous portion size, which also made for excellent leftovers. The pork strips themselves were not too thick or thin and melted right in my mouth, resulting in a rating of 9/10.
Spicy Shrimp Stir Fry Udon ($15.95)
My final order was the shrimp stir fry udon. The stir fry contains thick udon noodles, onion, chives, red bell pepper, and shrimp (though you can substitute for beef, chicken, or opt for veggies). You can also customize your spice levels; though I went for the standard, I was not prepared for the kick it packed. With each bite, the heat built up, leaving me teary eyed, but hooked. Even the onions, which I normally avoid, were sauteed and caramelized beautifully, adding just the right crunch. This one is definitely for the spice lovers, but even if you’re not, the flavor is worth it. Without a doubt, the stir fry udon earns a rating of 10/10.
One of my favorite things about Yoodon is how seamlessly they incorporate vegetables into every dish. While I don’t usually gravitate towards veggie-heavy meals, the chefs here manage to make them not only palatable but genuinely enjoyable — ideal if you’re trying to eat healthier without sacrificing flavor. Each dish brought me a sense of comfort and warmth, and the staff were incredibly kind and welcoming. I’ll definitely be returning, perhaps with a friend, and maybe next time, I’ll even try the cheeseburger.
