A Spin-off Done Right: Snow White and the Huntsman

Rating: 4.5/5

As a spin-off of the Disney movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, this uncanny film is full of adventure and fantasy. Despite it not being one of the newest released movies, it is still a great spin-off of the first Disney princess ever to be produced. The film stars Kristen Stewart, known for her featured role in Twilight, as Snow White, and Chris Hemsworth, famous for playing Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the huntsman. With these two talented actors, this movie was destined to be a success.

We all know the fairytale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but this movie switches the gears, giving the plot a much more eerie feeling. It carries the valuable lessons of the Disney film while adopting a chilling and darker tone. In the film, Snow White loses her mother at a young age while her father is killed by his newly wedded wife in order for her to steal his throne and power. This woman is known to be the “fairest of them all.” Similar to the evil old lady at the beginning of the Disney movie, the stepmother imprisons Snow White and keeps her in the castle while she wreaks havoc over her kingdom. After many years go by, Snow White is able to escape just to see how much life has changed for people under the Queen’s power. The Queen, desperately needing Snow White in order to continue being the fairest, orders a huntsman to find her.

During the extensive journey Snow White went through, she explored many regions, which included the Dark Forest, a grisly and horrific stop on her path, as well as the Sanctuary, a place filled with beautiful nature and animals and is also the home of the fairies. The animations used to show the places Snow White visited added to the beauty of this film. They were created perfectly, fitting both the Snow White fairytale and the spine-chilling undertone the directors had added.

Personally, Snow White always seemed boring to me, as I found it very cliché. However, the changes made throughout this film made it very enticing and compelling. The actors did a great job portraying their roles and bringing this fable to life. In addition, it’s a great movie to relax and watch with family and friends after a long week at school.

While the ending seemed quite anticlimactic, as I felt more could have been added to tie everything together, overall the film was brilliant. Fantasy and adventure have always been my favorite genres, and Snow White and the Huntsman was a great example of how to perfect them in a movie.
