The best announcements from CES 2023

Adam Sayah, Technology Review Editor

Few conventions are as widely renowned as the Consumer Electronics Show, or CES. Taking place every January, CES features the most outlandish and advanced technology from a wide range of companies, some more established than others. While this year’s show paled in comparison to 2020’s convention, which featured flying taxis and concepts of uber-modern cities, CES 2023 marked a return to normalcy for the largest electronics show in the world while showcasing the unique tech that is expected at such a show. Here are some of the highlights of this year’s CES.

Lenovo Yoga Book 9i

Traditional laptops consist of a clamshell design, with half of the laptop housing the display and the other half the keyboard and trackpad. Lenovo has a different idea of what a laptop should look like, however, with its Yoga Book 9i. The 9i features two large displays with a detachable keyboard that can be magnetically attached to one of the displays, creating a concoction of glass and metal. With half a dozen possible orientations of the laptop and keyboard, it would simply be impossible to describe them given the constraints of the English language; just reference the image linked here.

BMW i Vision Dee

The color of someone’s car can say a lot about their personality, but what if their car changes colors? BMW imagines a future where cars are cladded with E-ink panels that can individually change color from dull grays to vibrant pinks and everything in between. The i Vision Dee concept car is covered in 240 of these panels in addition to showcasing virtual assistants powered by artificial intelligence, an augmented reality dashboard, and a take on a futuristic car cabin. Asus ROG Raikiri Pro

OLED, the advanced display technology where each pixel emits its own light, has a unique purpose in Asus’s new controller. That’s right, a controller with its own mini display. The display could be used to track battery life on the controller, show microphone status, or simply display eye-catching graphics. The ROG Raikiri Pro is not only an extremely “professional” controller fit with extra customizable buttons and paddles, but it also features tri-mode connectivity (over wired connection, Bluetooth, and radio frequency) on Xbox Series S/X consoles and PC for more responsive inputs. Withings U-Scan

Withings has made giant leaps in the past when it comes to smart scales and smart watches. Therefore, through natural evolution, the French consumer health company decided to make an entirely new product: a urine sensor. The U-Scan is a tiny, white plastic puck that sticks to the inside of a toilet bowl and can provide important information regarding one’s hydration and nutrient intake (or outtake). The sensor is also able to detect critical hormones, and use this data to provide recommendations and updates for those who ovulate for more advanced cycle tracking. Withings believes that the U-Scan is an essential health monitor, but with its hefty $500 price tag, it is unlikely to find a home inside many toilets.
