Having trouble finding the perfect costume this Halloween and don’t want to spend money? Here is a list of costumes you can most likely assemble at home without a single purchase.
Paddington
Everyone remembers this adorable children’s book character. Paddington is cute, lovable, and easy to re-create. All you need are red rain boots, a red bucket hat, a blue rain-jacket, and a brown briefcase. To slightly elevate this look, glue a pair of brown ears to your bucket hat or grab a headband and apply the same procedure. To make the costume more authentic, you can add the brown luggage tag with the writing “Please look after this bear. Thank you.” However, if this feels like too much of a hassle, you can’t go wrong with just the boots, hat, and rain jacket.
Olivia Rodrigo’s “Sour” Album Cover
Pop and DIY go hand in hand in this costume. This well-known album cover should be easily recognizable if properly executed. Embody Olivia Rodrigo’s “Sour” look with a plaid blue skirt, a pink tank top, and lots of colorful stickers. All you’d need to do for this costume is to spell out the word “sour” across your face using black and white stickers. For accuracy, you could attach the word to your tongue like she does in the album cover. By doing this, people should have no trouble recognizing who you’re dressed as.
Clark Kent
Clark Kent’s look can work for both guys and girls. It’s not a Superman costume, but rather Superman’s undercover identity. Layer a Superman tee under a button up, loosen a red tie, and leave the shirt half way unbuttoned so that the Superman emblem is visible. For this, you could either buy a Superman shirt or print the symbol out and tape it onto a t-shirt you already own. Beyond that, all you need are glasses and jeans, or a skirt to finish this look.
Casey Becker
For those of you who know and love the horror mystery movie Scream, this costume is for you. Drew Barrymore’s character “Casey Becker” wears a simple outfit, being a white long-sleeve knit sweater (which you can always leave as is or cover it in blood for a more accurate look), light-washed blue jeans, and sneakers. To perfectly execute this look, a blond bob wig with bangs is ideal, but not absolutely imperative. A red lip and cordless landline phone would also be a great addition to this outfit if you want to take things up a notch.
Max Goof
“Max Goof”, the son of the famous Disney character “Goofy”, is an exceptionally effortless costume to replicate. All you’d need is black socks to pose as ears, a blue or black baseball hat to hold these socks in place, a black long sleeve layered under a red short sleeve one, sunglasses, and blue jeans. Black face paint of any sort is also fairly crucial for this look, and should be applied in a circle on one’s nose. The finishing touch to this look would be white gloves, which should make it clear who inspired the outfit.
Jennifer’s Body
Although popular, the iconic looks from the movie Jennifer’s Body will never get old. The character Jennifer has many outfits people love to re-create, but the easiest one to do is definitely her white puffer jacket look. All you need for this is a white puffer jacket with some fake blood smeared onto it, a jean skirt, red tights, and a black tank top. This costume never misses and is a go-to if you’re unsure about who to go as.
If you’ve been struggling to find the right costume for you this Halloween and are running out of time, hopefully one of these options is the best fit for you. No matter what costume you land on, it should ultimately be one you enjoy executing. Thus, I’d advise you to refrain from stressing over such a decision and simply find pleasure in expressing yourself in the spooky way you can every October 31st.
