With the 2026 season of America’s favorite pastime closing in, there is much skepticism regarding how the sport will be arranged and which team(s) will come out on top of the scoreboard. There are many teams to look out for as the season kicks in, with many players to look out for the future of the sport.
Starting with the current MLB frontrunners, The Los Angeles Dodgers are aiming for a three-peat in the World Series, something that hasn’t been accomplished in 25 years. With the chase for their third consecutive triumph, the LA Dodgers are also chasing a higher payroll. They’re projecting more than thirty million dollars after signing world-class position player Kyle Tucker and reliever Edwin Diaz on the free agent market to go with the team’s profligate spending.
Another team that fans should keep an eye on is the Arizona Diamondbacks. They have demonstrated an intensified commitment to small-ball and base stealing, a strategy that is amplified by the effects of larger bases. Fans can expect the Diamondbacks to lead the league in stolen base attempts this season. Opposing teams will need to adapt by effectively holding runners and varying pitch delivery times, as these adjustments make a real difference against this up-and-coming team.
Moving on, another team to look out for during this baseball season is the Cincinnati Reds, who are currently going through a large youth development phase. Though some may call their upcoming roster inexperienced in terms of league rotations, the Reds’ starters feature three pitchers under the age of 25 who are expected to post high strikeout totals. These three pitchers, Brandon Williamson, Rhett Lowder, and Chase Burns, are expected to front the next generation of MLB.
The San Diego Padres, on the other hand, have been shrouded in a fog of uncertainty following a series of offseason position changes. As a result, the Padres enter this season with a scattered and unsettled defensive alignment, particularly in outfield range. It has been a cause for concern throughout the last few months in the spring training session. Teams facing San Diego should put them to the test by playing more outfielders frequently. Conversely, Padres starters must generate more swings and misses to limit hard contact, given that their defenders remain in questionable positions.
As of April 2, Kyle Tucker was batting .174 with four hits in 23 at-bats, including one home run and three runs batted in for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Edwin Diaz had made three appearances out of the bullpen, throwing three total innings with a 3.00 earned run average and striking out four batters while walking one.
As for the three young pitchers from the Cincinnati Reds, they are each expected to appear in the following days, with many anticipating high-stat performances from their openers. Brandon Williamson, Rhett Lowder, and Chase Burns were all either on the injured list, in extended spring training, or assigned to the minor leagues at that point in the season, but are expected to have large turnarounds upon return.
With the league’s balance of power constantly shifting between big-spending frontrunners like the Dodgers, small-ball specialists like the Diamondbacks, and youth-driven teams like the Reds, the 2026 MLB season promises a level of unpredictability that was not seen in previous years.
