The Golden Globe Awards is a ceremony with over 80 years of history. The awards are presented to select nominees to recognize excellence in film and television and are administered by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. As a significant part of Hollywood’s awards season, the Golden Globes honor productions, actors, and actresses across a wide range of categories, from drama to comedy and music. For those who attend, receiving a Golden Globe marks a major milestone in their careers, making it a highly sought-after achievement.
This year’s ceremony was shocking, to say the least. Controversy rose as snubs piled up throughout the night, alongside historic changes like the introduction of a new award category. Major films featured this year included Sinners, Marty Supreme, Frankenstein, and Bugonia.
Among this year’s winners were Timothée Chalamet, who won Best Actor for Marty Supreme; Teyana Taylor who received Best Supporting Actress for One Battle After Another; and Owen Cooper, who won Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for the hit TV series Adolescence, making him the youngest actor ever to win a Golden Globe Award. All of these awards, in my opinion, were well-deserved as each of these actors, alongside many others, worked tirelessly to produce honorable pieces of film and media. Especially Owen Cooper, who played the main character in the series Adolescence, which was released in March of last year. The series quickly became popular and gained traction on social media as countless fans began talking about the new thrilling crime series. The popularity of this series stemmed not only from its riveting plotline, but also the actor’s excellent portrayal of the series’ main character, who was a complex role as well. It was partly due to Cooper’s performance that the series was able to soar as high as it did.
Additionally, this year marked Timothee Chalamet’s first Golden Globe award, which was awarded to him to honor his performance in the recently released movie, Marty Supreme. The film follows the complex life story of Marty Mauser, played by Chalamet, a young and determined ping-pong player who’s determined to make a name for himself. However, Marty faces numerous challenges and faces dark life struggles that he must combat. The film highlights the journey of a champion and the hardships he faces while also carrying alongside it a romantic subplot. A movie this profound and thoughtful definitely warrants the lead actor earning himself an award for his excellent performance on-screen.
Other top movie winners included Hamnet, which won Best Drama Motion Picture, and KPop Demon Hunters, a fan favorite that received both Best Original Song for “Golden” and Best Animated Motion Picture. Despite the mixed opinions regarding the film’s popularity, I, along with many others, believe these awards were well deserved. The movie demonstrated strong character growth and portrayed relatable characters with engaging dynamics, making it enjoyable for all ages. While some viewers felt the humor felt forced or awkward, the movie successfully appealed to its target demographic, young children, through resonant music and meaningful themes of self-acceptance.
Another notable winner was Sinners, which received the Golden Globe for Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. However, despite winning multiple awards, many viewers expressed dissatisfaction with the film’s overall reception at the ceremony. Fans argue that despite Sinners’ cultural impact, Black representation, and critical acclaim, was overlooked for major categories such as Best Drama and Best Director. Others pointed out that lead actress Wunmi Mosaku was neither awarded nor formally acknowledged, despite widespread praise of her performance.
Film and entertainment have a long history of undermining people of color and underrepresenting minority-led stories. Sinners wasn’t simply a vampiric movie set in the 1930s. It portrayed Black culture and struggles through themes that extended far beyond a cliche apocalyptic setting. While the awards it received are by no means insignificant, it does not fully reflect the film’s artistry or cultural significance. This year’s snubs highlight broader systemic challenges that continue to affect Black-led and representative films.
Furthermore, this year’s Golden Globes introduced a historic change with the addition of a new category: Best Podcast. This category aims to honor excellence in audio and video storytelling, marking the first time a major U.S. awards show has recognized podcasts. The inaugural award was presented to Good Hangs with Amy Poehler. This addition represents a positive shift toward inclusivity, acknowledging a widely consumed and influential form of media. Podcasts allow creators to discuss diverse topics in accessible formats, and this recognition honors the dedication and creativity behind them.
Overall, the 2026 Golden Globe Awards proved to be an unforgettable night filled with triumphs, losses, and controversy. From surprising snubs to bold fashion statements on the red carpet, the ceremony once again captured the attention of many. Whether praised or criticized, this year’s event reminds audiences why the Golden Globes remain one of the most talked-about nights in entertainment. Serving as a precursor to the Oscars and Critics Choice Awards, the Golden Gloves continues to highlight the cultural importance of film and the immense effort behind its creation.
