A Thousand Boy Kisses by Tillie Cole is a young adult romance novel that centers on the story of Poppy and Rune, childhood friends turned teenage lovers, as they navigate love and grief. Told through a dual-perspective narrative, the novel explores the intensity of their bond and the emotional weight of their experiences.
The story follows Poppy, a Southern girl from Georgia, and Rune, a Norwegian boy whose family immigrates to America. After moving in next door to Poppy, Rune quickly becomes part of her world. Their friendship develops naturally, and over the course of a decade, their connection deepens, and they develop romantic feelings for each other. Cole portrays their relationship with depth and you can really feel their soulful connection, it’s something I’ve never felt reading a book before. When Rune’s family returns to Norway, the separation becomes the novel’s first major roadblock. His eventual return, however, complicates the relationship even further, as Poppy is confronted with a new version of Rune shaped by their time apart. He is no longer the boy she remembers, and Cole does a great job at conveying the conflicting feelings that time away from your partner can bring about.
One charming aspect I loved about this novel was the lovely connection Poppy’s grandparents had. They had a jar where they wrote down their special kisses, and when Poppy’s grandmother passed the jar on to her, she told Poppy to only write down the kisses that made her heart burst. I really loved the idea of the jar, it was a lovely addition to the story. It worked to reinforce the main themes of symbolizing memories and our attempts to hold onto fleeting experiences.
At the same time, the novel relies on several familiar tropes, including the “best friends to lovers” arc and the classic “grumpy sunshine couple.” Rune’s brooding intensity, coupled with his leather jacket, particularly embody YA archetypes and while I found these tropes really predictable and a bit cliche, it didn’t hinder the emotional depth during the intense moments.
It is a beautifully written book. Cole’s descriptions of the characters’ emotions are vivid and persistent and are what make this book so special. I clung onto every single word and simply put it feels like a real cute and heartwarming love story that makes any reader believe in love again. It makes you want to go out and find love for yourself.
One notable aspect about this book was the author’s celebration of young love. Rather than dismissing teenage relationships as trivial, this story gave them strength and the capability of shaping identity. Rune’s love for Poppy was beyond intense. He was prepared to do whatever it took to ensure that she felt his love at every moment, underscoring the novel’s central belief in the significance of early emotional bonds.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to everyone. Every single tear I shed while reading it was absolutely worth it. Get ready to cry a lot. This book will forever hold a special place in my heart; it’s highly charged, romantic, and forever unforgettable. Above all, it restored my faith in the existence of unconditional love, the kind of love that can withstand the most pain and still remain eternally.
